ED events per year have increased over time for both Māori (10.5% to 17.5%, 2006-2012) and non-Māori (11.5% to 15.9%, 2006-2012).
A higher proportion of Māori ED events were seen in the younger age groups, compared to non-Māori, particularly those aged 0-4 years (14.5% versus 6.6%) and 15-24 years (25.0% versus 16.3%). In comparison, a higher proportion of non-Māori ED events were seen in the older age groups, particularly in the 55-64 age group (10.4% versus 5.4%), 65-74 age group (9.3% versus 3.5%) and those aged ≥75 (14.1% versus 1.9%).
